Express freely online ≠ speaking without thinking

“Think twice before you speak, because your words and influence will plant the seed of either success or failure in the mind of another.” — Napoleon Hill

In general, be careful when posting or commenting on sensitive topics:

  • RELIGION
  • ETHNICITY
  • RACE
  •  GENDER
  •  SEXUALITY

In some countries that allow high levels of free speech–like Finland, Sweden, Norway, Canada and New Zealand, citizens have the right to express freely online as long as not jeopardising anyone. Of course they also set the limit on criminal publications such as network abetting crime or distributing child pornography.

But in some countries that have strict restrictions on freedom of expression, such as China, Cuba and Iran, you can never forget that there is a big brother watching you from the behind when you expressing opinions. The only confirmed right at those heavily regulated countries is the right to keep silent.

Censorship, or prior restraint by government, is the opposition of free expression. Some countries keep strict control over expression. Once people write something online questioning about the authority of their government, they may face jail and even get tagged an instigator.

When traveling to the countries that have strict regulations on the freedom of expression, travelers should avoid post anything that would offend the governments or the citizens. Sometimes discussing political issues inadequately by using social media or blogging may cause serious consequence. So just check the censorship record of the country before your visit and make sure you haven’t posted anything that might put you in danger.

So in the nutshell, think before you speak, think before you post.
